Design and development for public services and non-profits: services that everyone has to be able to use, whoever they are and whatever device they have, built to the standards public bodies are held to.

Designed for everyone

Who has to be able to use it.

Public services are used by everyone, so we design and test for the people most often left behind.

  • Someone using a screen reader

Every label, heading and error announced, in the right order.

Tested with assistive technology, not only with automated tools.

  • Someone on an old phone

A service that loads on a weak signal and works on a small screen.

Light pages, designed mobile first, needing nothing new to run.

  • Someone reading in a second language

Short sentences and plain words, with nothing to decode.

Content written in plain English and tested for understanding.

  • Someone in a hurry

To finish the task in one go, without starting again.

One question per page, saved progress and a clear next step.

What you get

Services that work for everyone, and can prove it.

  • Research with the public

Sessions with the people the service is for, including those with low digital confidence and those who use assistive technology.

  • Service design

The whole journey across web, phone, paper and counter, not only the screens.

  • Plain language

Content written so the first reading is enough, for people who are busy, stressed or reading in a second language.

  • Accessible by default

WCAG 2.2 AA from the first wireframe, and an accessibility statement you can publish with confidence.

  • Evidence for assessment

Research, design decisions and accessibility testing documented as we go, ready for a service assessment.

  • Build

Services engineered to be maintained by your team long after launch.

How we work in public services

Four steps, tested with real people at every one.

  1. 01

    Discover

Who uses the service, who cannot, and why, heard directly and early.

  2. 02

    Shape

Journeys and content designed for the least confident user, reviewed with policy and operations.

  3. 03

    Test

Prototypes in front of real users, including people who rely on assistive technology.

  4. 04

    Build

Released in small steps, with accessibility checked every sprint.

The rules, in short

Public services have to work for everyone, by law.

In the UK, the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018 require websites and mobile apps to be accessible and to publish an accessibility statement. The government checks them against WCAG 2.2 AA.

Across the EU, the Web Accessibility Directive sets the same duty for public sector bodies, and in the US, Section 508 applies to federal agencies and the technology they buy.
